Have you ever suddenly jerked awake soon after drifting off to sleep? You are confused and don’t know why your body suddenly wake up.
This is common occurrence for many people. Scientists finally found out what does it mean. Researchers have created theories about this and they called it “hypnic jerk”.
Sometimes it feels like you are falling from a great height. People are trying to explain this feeling on a different ways, some of them thought that demon is choking you while you sleep. All of us experienced the phenomenon differently, but all of us end up with the same result – waking up from your state of rest.
One of the theories define this state as a visual perception of falling that people experience in their dreams just before they wake up. Presumably, the parts of the brain working dream creation might be trying to make sense of the sudden urge to wake up, and this results in a dream scenario being created. There are many researchers who are working to confirm this theory.
Also, hypnic jerks can be caused by some outside causes such as caffeine or tobacco, according to the experts. They suggest to avoid drinking coffee within hours before bed in order to reduce the chances of succumbing to the phenomena. The medications such as Adderall or Ritalin can also cause a similar effect.
Sleep deprivation is also a trigger as the condition is brought on when your body relaxes but a part of your brain remains stimulated.
This phenomenon usually happens when you fall a sleep very quickly. In the first phase, your heart rate and breathing slows down quickly. If you are really exhausted, the brain proceeds through this phase of sleep too quickly and it confuses the brain into thinking you are dying and that systems are failing. The body react with a jolt of chemicals that make you jerk awake.
